Motion sickness (MS) is described as a feeling of unwellness, or sickness felt in various motion environments.
The seminar will focus on the new measurement set up estabilished at institute of biomedical and Neural Engineering at Reykjavik university. The called BioVRSea which trigger and assess postural control (PC) and MS during a Virtual Reality (VR) experience combined with moving platform while measuring individual sway and brain, muscle, and heart electrical activities. BioVRSea is a unique infrastructure which comprises a moving platform, VR system and EEG, EMG and HR sensors. The virtual reality simulates the movement of a boat in the open sea, where amplitude and frequencies of the waves can be adjusted by the operator. The BioVRSea platform’s main purposes are to assess the quantitative physiology associated to the PC response to this complex task. We can measure either the pre and post experiment and as well the individual response during each phase of the experiment. Indeed, by the non-invasively decoding the dynamics of brain communication during the PC task and in healthy or individuals with balance disorders. task and in healthy or individuals with balance disorders.
The aim of this novel paradigm is to quantify MS and PC physiology and develop a predictive model based on bio signal features and self-reported conditions to create a multi metric subject spefic profile. This tool can be employed to support decision, evaluation and diagnostics.
