About the speaker

Monica Alderighi received her Master degree in Physics at the University of Milan in 1984. She joined the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics, formerly Italian National Council of Research, in Milan, Italy, in 1988 as a staff research scientist. Over the last twenty years her research has been focused on the definition of fault tolerance computing systems. Specifically, her main research interests concern the development of fault detection and tolerance techniques, the study of radiation effects in digital microelectronics devices, and the study of reliable and high performance computing systems for space applications.
Her professional activities include the collaboration to various Conferences and Journals, such the IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science, the Conference on Radiation and its Effects on Components and Systems, and the ACM Conference on Computing Frontiers.
She has been and still is responsible of research contracts in collaboration with international companies and research centers, such as the European Space Agency, the Italian Space Agency, and Thales Alenia Space Italia.

Abstract

The first half of the talk will discuss issues commonly dealt with when developing system for space applications. It will review the main components of the space radiation e describe their effects on digital microelectronic devices. In the second half, the talk will briefly illustrate the project of the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope, in which Italy is among its founding countries.
