About the speaker

Carlos Silvestre received the Licenciatura degree in Electrical Engineering from the Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST) of Lisbon, Portugal, in 1987 and the M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering and the Ph.D. degree in Control Science from the same school in 1991 and 2000, respectively. In 2011 he received the Habilitation in Electrical Engineering and Computers also from IST. Since 2000, he is with the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Instituto Superior Tecnico, where he is currently an Associate Professor of Systems Decision and Control, on leave. He is now a Professor of the Department o Electrical and Computers Engineering of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Macau.

Over the past years, he has conducted research on the subjects of navigation guidance and control of air and underwater robots. His current research interests include linear and nonlinear control and estimation theory; hybrid systems; multi- agent control systems; networked control systems; inertial navigation systems and real time architectures for complex autonomous systems with application to unmanned air and underwater vehicles.

Abstract

This talk focuses on the development of nonlinear controllers for autonomous vehicles (AVs), motivated by the requirements of the current, and the yet to be envisaged, applications of AVs. Particular emphasis will be given to the design and experimental evaluation of control algorithms for load transportation by quadrotor vehicles, multiple aerial vehicle control, and trajectory planning for quadrotor vehicles. Furthermore, some topics on hovercraft trajectory tracking and path following, and Autonomous Surface Craft control will also be presented. Experimental results obtained at the Sensor-Based Cooperative Robotics Research Laboratory (SCORE-Lab) of the University of Macau will be presented and discussed.
