About the speaker
Massimo Condoluci received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. in telecommunications engineering in 2008 and 2011, respectively, from the University Mediterranea of Reggio Calabria, Italy. From the same university, he received the Ph.D. in information technology in 2015. Since 2015, he is a research associate at the Centre for Telecommunications Research (CTR), King's College London, UK. His current research interests include mobile and fixed network convergence, machine-type communications and group-oriented communications over 5G networks.
Abstract
The Internet of Things (IoT) has unique features in terms of traffic, energy consumption, density if compared to the traditional traffic over the Internet. This dictates for an ad-hoc design of low power wide area (LPWA) technologies to reflect this uniqueness of the IoT. The ecosystem of LPWA networks is now changing, with more technologies now available to reflect the changes in the business of the IoT. Motivated by the already available wide coverage and network infrastructure of mobile networks, telecom vendors and operators have now standardized NarrowBand-IoT (NB-IoT) to support the IoT via mobile networks. In this seminar, we will firstly study the key features of the IoT traffic and we will then analyze the key differences among the main LPWA technologies. We will then focus on how mobile networks are changing to efficiently support the IoT, going from the details of radio access in NB-IoT to the recent updates in the core network.
