The Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Information Engineering of the University of Bologna is going to hire a Doctoral Candidate (DC) funded by the Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Learning Network for Decentralized critical Infrastructure Asset Monitoring and coNDition assessment (DIAMOND), a stimulating, high-level European Doctoral programme including 16 PhD students trained in several European countries (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101227338). The enrolled researcher will be appointed for three years in the fulfilment of a Ph.D. degree awarded by the University of Bologna as part of the Engineering and Information Technology for Structural Monitoring and Environmental Monitoring and Risk Management (EIT4SEMM) PhD programme.
Project and activity description
Massively-dense intelligent sensor networks for integrity assessment of infrastructure or machines via SHM and prognostics can bring transformative digital change, but inhibited by their large scale, computing demands, datasets and power demands. The appointed researcher will address these barriers by creating a hierarchically distributed sensor network with intelligent tasks and feature extractions at sensing location.
The fulfilment of this goal will be achieved by combining leading-edge technologies in the field of embedded signal processing, with specific emphasis on Tiny Machine Learning, Artificial Internet-of-Things, analog-to-information conversion.
The PhD activity will be supervised by Prof. Luca De Marchi and co-supervised by Dr. Federica Zonzini from the Intelligent Sensor Systems Lab, who are seeking for exceptionally motivated young scientists willing to explore the forefront challenges of electronics applied to structural engineering demands while working in a unique international cohort.
Entry requirements
Application will open in springtime 2026
A minimum of an upper-class honours degree (2:1) or overseas equivalent in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Information and Communication Technologies, or Computer Science Engineering.
To be eligible, applicants must fulfil the MSCA basic requirements:
-
At the time of appointment, the successful candidate must not have already obtained a PhD. Please note that candidates who already have a PhD are not eligible to apply.
-
Additionally, candidates must not have resided in Italy for more than 12-months in the three years immediately before the appointment.
-
The language of MSCA is English. Candidates must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the network training.
