About the speaker

Felix Walter is a research associate and Ph.D. student at Technische Universität Dresden, Germany. He obtained his diploma in Information Systems Engineering from the faculty of electrical engineering in 2016. He is working on approaches for Delay- and Disruption-tolerant Networks since 2014 and has co-developed the open source DTN protocol implementation "µPCN". Besides, he is working as a software developer for a local cloud provider and is the CTO of D3TN GmbH, a young company specifically offering services and consulting concerning "challenged networks".

Abstract

The seminar will give an introduction to Ring Road Networks as an application of the Delay- and Disruption-tolerant Networking (DTN) architecture. The presented concept leverages LEO satellites as "data mules" to exchange information between decoupled sites and the Internet. By that, the network faces frequent disruptions on individual links as well as large end-to-end delays, making the application of conventional Internet protocols such as TCP and IP impossible. In the second part, the seminar will provide a brief introduction to DTN routing as well as an overview of existing approaches and discuss their applicability to Ring Road Networks. Finally, past and future practical evaluations will be presented, including first-hand insight into the challenges involved with the preparation and execution of a DTN field test.
