About the speakers

Alberto Ginesi was born in Parma, Italy, in November 1967. He received the Dr. Ing. (Cum Laude) and Ph.D degrees in electronic engineering from University of Pisa, Italy, in 1993 and 1998, respectively. In 1996-1997 he spent one year at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, and performing research on digital transmissions for wireless applications. In 1997, he joined Nortel Networks and in 2000 Catena Networks, both in Ottawa, Canada, where he worked on Digital Subscriber Loop (DSL) technologies and contributed to the definition of the second-generation ADSL standards within the ITU-R standardization body. Since 2002 he joined ESA Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC), Noordwijk, The Netherlands, where he is currently covering the position of the Head ofthe Telecommunication-TT&C Systems & Techniques Section of the Technical and Quality Management Directorate and is responsible for the R&D of satellite telecommunication and TT&C systems. His main research interests lie in the area of advanced digital communication systems and techniques from theory to HW implementation. A.Ginesi is co-author of more than 50 scientific publications and more than 20 international patents on subjects covering both DSL and satellite communication systems.

Rita Rinaldo has obtained her Master Degree in Telecommunications Engineering (summa cum laude) from the University of Bologna in March 2000. In May 2005 she has received her PhD and in 2014 her MBA degree. Since February 2001 Rita Rinaldo has been with the European Space Agency, taking up different positions with the Technical Directorate first and then with the Telecommunications and Integrated Applications Directorate. She is currently in charge of the Institutional Projects Section in the Integrated and Telecommunications-related Applications Department, where she is responsible for the management of applications projects in the domains of security and safety, maritime, aviation, RPAS, transport, energy, environment and crisis management.

Abstract

Introduction to Satellite Telecommunication Techniques and Technologies

This presentation will first introduce the concepts related to the satellite orbits used in telecommunications. Then, a review of the main architectures and technologies involved in SATCOM will be presented including both ground and space segment elements. A section covering an explanation of the link budget equation will then follow. Finally, the main techniques used for access schemes as well as a short review of the main SATCOM applications and services will be presented.

Satellite Applications and Services

The presentation will introduce the value of space for applications in different thematic areas (e.g. maritime, aeronautical ) and economic sectors (energy, agriculture, transport). It will show how space assets such as telecommunication, navigation and earth observation satellites can be used together with terrestrial technologies for innovative services answering the needs of many user communities. A few show-cases will support the reflection on the technical strength and weaknesses of the proposed solutions.
