Abstract
Massive machine-to-machine communications, the Internet of Things, wireless sensor networks feature a common application requirement: The need of transmitting small data packets from a large population of smart devices. The growing interest is these applications poses new challenges to the design and the engineering of communications protocols able to handle the sporadic nature of the data traffic in an efficient manner. In this presentation, we will focus on the impact on the physical and the medium access control layers, highlighting what are some of the current main research trends
About the speaker
Gianluigi Liva received the M.S. and the Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Bologna (Italy) in 2002 and 2006, respectively. Since 2003 he has been investigating channel codes for high data rate CCSDS (Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems) missions, in collaboration with the European Space Operations Centre of the European Space Agency (ESA-ESOC). From October 2004 to April 2005 he was researching at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he was designing low-complexity error correcting codes for space communications. Since 2006 he is with the Institute of Communications and Navigation at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), where he currently leads the Information Transmission group. In 2010 he has been appointed lecturer for channel coding at the Institute for Communications Engineering (LNT), Technische Universität München (TUM). In 2012 and 2013 he has been lecturing for channel coding at the Nanjing University of Science and Technology (China). Since 2014 he is lecturer for channel codes with iterative decoding at the Institute for Communications Engineering (LNT), Technische Universität München (TUM).
His main research interests include satellite communications, random access techniques and error control coding. He is/has been active in the DVB-SH, DVB-RCS and DVB-S2 standardization groups, as well as in the standardization of error correcting codes for deep-space communications within the CCSDS. He is IEEE Senior Member and he serves IEEE as reviewer for Transactions, Journals and Conferences. He received the 2007 IST Mobile & Wireless Communication Summit Best Paper Award. He has been co-chair of the First DLR Workshop on Random Access and Coding (2013), of the 2014 Sino-German Workshop "Bridging Theory and Practice in Wireless Communications and Networking" in Shenzhen (China) and of the IEEE ICC 2014 Workshop on Massive Uncoordinated Access Protocols (MASSAP) in Sydney (Australia). In 2013 he has been appointed Editor for IEEE Communications Letters.
