Abstract
The cost of health services grows exponentially with the widespread use of complex diagnostic procedures as well as with population ageing. Cardiovascular and metabolic disease are paradigmatic cases. At present, the strategy of prevention, attempting to modify factors related to the genesis of the disease seems the only way to limit the epidemic growth of cardio-metabolic diseases. In any case, finely tuned personalized strategies are necessary. In this perspective, a novel technological device allowing the unobtrusive self-monitoring of individual cardio-metabolic risk has been developed in the EC Project SEMEOTICONS. This device, having the exterior aspect of a conventional mirror to be hosted in every-day life environments, is equipped with a suite of cameras and sensors and is able to compute a set of descriptors of the user’s face related to cardio-metabolic risk. Descriptors are integrated into a concise indicator (well-being index) describing the individual status and used to trigger a guidance system that warns the user about dangerous conditions and noxious habits, and helping her/him in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
